The nursing career can be improved from being a registered nurse.  More often than not, most think that being a registered nurse is the ultimate goal.  But in truth nurses can move up higher in the nursing ladder with a nursing specialization through certification or master’s degree.  There are many fields that a nurse can focus on and one of them is forensic nursing.  Forensic nursing is newest addition to the nursing specializations you can choose to pursue.

As forensic nursing is a specialization, it is essential to start with a nursing degree and become a registered nurse.  Registered nurses need to take up a bachelor’s degree in nursing then get hold of a license.  From there, you can be exposed to the work of a forensic nursing when assigned to the emergency room.  Victims usually go immediately to the emergency area of a medical facility. Another way to become a forensic nurse is to get a master’s degree program in forensic nursing.  This educational attainment is preferred when applying as a death investigator or legal medial expert witness in a court proceeding.  Various schools and universities offer this Master of Science in forensic nursing.

Forensic nursing may be something that is looked upon as lucrative after all the crime investigating shows that have come up.  But in reality forensic nurses are not there to be part of the glamor as opposed to what it displayed in exaggerated drama series.  It is about providing the truth to those who seek it in a scientific manner as well as legal means.  Forensic nursing may be new but it has attracted many especially those who want to work in the medical field with legal inputs.

Surgical nurses can work in numerous work setting and industries. Aside from the health and medical industry, they can also work in various industries and work for private companies that needed health experts. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, work opportunities for nursing professions including surgical nurses are expected to grow about 20% in the coming years locally and worldwide. With the increasing population all over the world and the growing number of elderly people, more and more health care professionals will be needed in order to provide care and medical services for the patients.

In order to become a surgical nurse, you need to finish first a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and pass the licensure exam in order to become a registered nurse. After obtaining your license, you need to undergo rigorous training and practice their profession for a given period in order to become a certified surgical nurse. A lot of nurses today prefer to enhance their education level and trainings like becoming a surgical nurse in order to earn higher income and get better career options as a professional surgical nurse.

A surgical nurse’s job is really quite demanding so make sure that you are prepared for these responsibilities before choosing this profession. Aside from earning great income, one great thing about becoming a surgical nurse is the satisfaction and fulfillment of being able to help people who are in need for medical and health care. I recently was doing a little research for school when I realized there are some common and popular nurse/nursing myths out there. It seems there are two trains of thought: There is the public’s view of the nursing profession, and then there are those who actually know about the nursing profession.

I’m not sure if it’s our own fault or if Hollywood has a stranglehold on the general population’s opinion. This particular top 10 list is intended for all those who are considering pursuing the profession of nursing–I’d like to call it the “Here’s what we are not and don’t do” list:

1. We don’t wear all-white uniforms.
2. No, we stopped wearing caps a long time ago.
3. We do more than pass medications.
4. We do more than just clean up “poo.”
5. This is not Grey’s Anatomy – we’re not secretly sleeping with all the doctors. Nor is this House – we do the blood draws.
6. No, not every “nurse” is the same. There is a profound difference between a Nurse Practitioner and a Nursing Assistant (about 6-8 years of education).
7. We actively collaborate in the decision-making process and don’t just take orders.
8. No, we are not all women.
9. No, we work in other places besides hospitals and physicians’ offices.
10. No, we didn’t fail at becoming doctors. We chose this profession.

I know, I know, we’ve beat this horse senseless, haven’t we? I have to admit, I am just scratching the surface here. I think we all could generate an endless list of nursing urban legends.
